MBAS ExhibitionS Expression of interest 2027:
We are seeking proposals from both emerging and established artists to be a part of a diverse and innovative exhibition program at Moores Building Art Space (MBAS) for our 2027 exhibition program.
We support contemporary practice across all disciplines including visual arts, installation, performance, expanded media and interdisciplinary projects. Recent highlights of the MBAS program include an exhibition by Alex Tandy, Annie Irvine, and George Howlett, and also Jane Ryan, alongside special projects such as A Life Remembered: A Tribute to Dawn Meader, which received the FRINGE WORLD Visual Arts Award (2026).
Moores Building Art Space (MBAS) is a dynamic exhibition venue in the heart of Fremantle’s historic west end. MBAS is managed by Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre and provides artists with the opportunity to develop ambitious, experimental and site-responsive exhibitions within its distinctive heritage environment.
Housed in a historic mercantile building on Henry Street, MBAS is characterised by exposed limestone walls, timber floors and open ceiling cavities. The space encourages artists to consider the architectural qualities and layered history of the site when developing exhibition proposals.
We welcome proposals from individual artists, artist groups and organisations across all artforms. We strongly encourage artists from First Nations, CALD, LGBTQIA+ and disability communities to apply.
Deadline: 1 June 2026
About the Space
Moores Building Art Space comprises two gallery areas within a heritage building in Fremantle’s historic west end. The main gallery measures approximately 12m × 14m with a ceiling height of 4.75m, while a second adjoining gallery measures approximately 7m × 8m with a ceiling height of 3.2m.
The character of the building is intentionally retained, and artists are encouraged to respond to the space’s raw architectural qualities. As the building is heritage protected, artworks and labels cannot be affixed directly to the original limestone walls. There is a large freestanding corner wall that can be drilled and nailed into as needed. This wall is 4.1m high, with lengths of 9.9m and 8.1m.
The gallery is artist-managed during exhibition periods, with exhibitors responsible for invigilation, installation of artworks and exhibition presentation. Technical support is provided on installation and de-installation days.
The gallery provides access to various display plinths for the artist’s use. Tools and access equipment are available during installs, however anything specific required by artists is at their own discretion. There is a PA audio system available for use during the exhibition opening for speeches and music, however any other audio-visual equipment required by artists needs to be supplied themselves.

Exhibition proposals are assessed through a competitive Expression of Interest process.
Applications are reviewed by Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre staff and external industry professionals, with consideration given to:

- Successful applicants will be notified following the assessment period
- Applicants will be allocated exhibition periods throughout the 2027 calendar
